If you're a young professional who's in the process of setting up shop in your first adult apartment, you've probably looked forward to getting rid of that hodgepodge of stray glassware, empty mason jars, and disposable cups and glasses that comprised the bar glass selection in your college accommodations. However, equipping an adult household with glassware can be a daunting task—after all, there are dozens of different types of glasses, all with different uses.
Keep in mind that it's not necessary to go all out—start with good quality glassware in the following types that you can build on over the course of time. The five following suggestions make a great foundation for glassware.
A Set of Beer Glasses
Drinking beer out of a designated glass instead of directly from a bottle or can is not only one of the signs of a civilized society, but it also helps increase the overall drinkability of the beverage.
A Set of Bucket Glasses
As the workhorse of the glassware cabinet, bucket glasses can be used in a pinch for just about any type of cocktail—and they also make good juice and water glasses.
A Set of Champagne Flutes
Just like an adult kitchen always has at least one bottle of good champagne on hand for impromptu celebrations, a good set of champagne flutes should be in every glassware cabinet. These can also pull double duty as elegant juice glasses if you decide to host a brunch.
A Set of Highball Glasses
Like bucket glasses, highball glasses can be used for nearly every type of cocktail, but because they're tall and narrow, they don't work well as everyday juice and/or water glasses. Use these for the cocktail course prior to the main course when hosting a dinner party or for small cocktail gatherings.
A Set of Wine Glasses
You've probably enjoyed a glass of wine or two during your college years that was served in something other than a wine glass, but good wine really needs to be served in proper wine glasses to get the most from the experience. Well-crafted wine glasses collect and release the aromas of the wine in just the right way, and the stem prevents the body heat from your hands from altering the temperature of the wine in the glass.
